In what could be dubbed Facebook’s 9/11, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger platforms have experienced major outages in multiple countries around the world.
Facebook experienced its first major outage on Monday, October 3, 2021 at 4:23pm UTC. The outage tracking website Downdetecter at its peak had over 5,000 user reports of Facebook outages worldwide.
Users trying to access Facebook in affected areas were greeted with the message: “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can.”
The Facebook subdomain that serves the static Facebook logo image was also worryingly down, with only Facebook’s 404 error page text served to end-users attempting to access Facebook.
As users flocked to the rival social media network Twitter, memes accompanying the hashtags #facebookdown #whatsappdown and #instagramdown trended.
There is a theory that social media giants may soon impose a vaccine mandate on their billions of vaxxed and unvaxxed users. Social media platforms such as Vax3dom.com – a vaccination pro-choice social network and business directory – have bucked this trend.
Other Twitter users were quick to point out the extend of Facebook’s global outage.
Facebook responded to the Facebook outage on Twitter within 15 minutes of the worldwide Facebook outage.
The Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram outage has continued for many users for hours since the initial Facebook outage occurred. Facebook has not indicated when the outage will be resolved, or what exactly was the reason behind the outage.
